ADSL: Proudly brought to me by TPG

I’ve recently signed up to TPG’s ADSL service for $49.95/month on a 512kbps plan with 20GB download limit, download more than that and my speed with be throttled down to 64kbps. That’s a dial-up speed if you’re not sure. IF I would’ve sign up about 1-2 weeks earlier, before the price restructuring of TPG’s plans, I’ll be getting a 1.5mbps plan with 30GB download limit at the same price. Every TPG’s ADSL plans are based on a 6-month contract, that means I’ll be getting the better plan for at least six months at the same price if I signed up earlier, but, another big thank you to Telstra’s crappy service for that. I lost out on the deal.

The service started in just 3 working days, despite TPG stating that it would be at LEAST 5-8 days (For Telstra to add my account in their Slexstream database - their ADSL database). Actually, you can be the first one to know once an ADSL connection is up, rather than waiting for your ISP to call or e-mail you. It’s simple, just plug your phone line to an ADSL modem and see if the DSL indicator is on. You don’t have to wait till after the stated waiting period. They’ll usually state a longer time than the actual time needed to activate, just to protect their company. ISP usually will have to wait for the confirmation from their telco on the connection, before they can e-mail their own confirmation to you. It’s a two step process. With your ADSL modem, you skip the first process.

Upon checking the router settings via my browser, I noticed something’s not right…
1.5mpbs for the price of 512kbps!
I’m getting 1536kbsp (1.5Mbps) download speed rather than 512kbps which I’ve signed up for.

My actual package
This is what I’ve signed up for. 512kbps on 20Gb download limit.

Well, I guess the ISP side hasn’t really activated my account in their own database yet. Before TPG says, “Hold it right there mate, and put your hands on your head!” and then put me back onto the 512k plan, I’ve so far riden on the free advantage of a faster connection and totalled downloads of 1369.584 mb! Not something to awe at, but it’s 1.4/20 to the download limit you know!
