Ever wonder how my unit house looks like from above the sky? You’ll probably need a helicopter to see that, but now, with Google Earth, everyone can look at the earth from the sky!
Google Earth
It’s not really a new thing this Google Earth, but satellite images really fascinate me since high school. I love geography, and I really love this piece of free software by Google which gives me the opportunities to see the world from space.

Now, the satellite images database are not 100%, they don’t cover every corner of the world in detail, only major cities of the world are actually captured on detailed images. So, take a look at my little home town called Sibu, it’s a big town, located in Sarawak of Malaysia.

Sibu from the Space
That’s the best picture of Sibu town you can get from Google Earth. Now, there’s something wrong with the color of the river, it’s brownish, sort of like milk tea (Teh C Peng in Hokkien) its color. Partly thanks to the heavy deforestation in the upper region of the river by Rimbunan Hijau – a global conglomerate of companies controlled by the Tiong family from Sibu, Sarawak.

Well, too bad that I cannot get a detailed satellite image of my home in Sibu, but, I think I should be lucky enough to get something on my current unit house in Melbourne, nevertheless, it’s a metropolitan city, ya know.

First off, it’s really a tricky thing trying to spot my house out of nowhere on Earth. I don’t have a map on hand for reference, no coordinates, the nearest map, that is Melway (a comprehensive detailed street maps of Melbourne) is in my car and I’m too lazy to go out and pick it. I’m browsing at Melbourne’s surrounding areas in Google Earth and see what I can find out of it. Now, I’ve been driving in Melbourne for quite some time and I should know the topology and basic geography of the area in which I live in. I spotted something quite familiar, something which looks like a racecourse.

Caulfield Racecourse
It’s the famous Caulfield Racecourse! The second thing I spot is the Monash University which stood by the Princess Highway. I travel up and down along this highway everyday, that should lead me to my house. I also spotted the railway, which makes my task easier.

As I move further east, I approached Carnegie, a neighbor town of Murrumbeena which I stayed in. I knew that I’ve got the right place. So I’m just looking for the landmark there. I went for Dick Smith Electronic’s Power House, which I visited quite frequently.
Dick Smith Electronic Power House in Carnegie
It’s really a huge store ain’t it, and there’s the railway behind it. Go east along it and the next station is, Murrumbeena.

Murrumbeena Road
The highway on the northern part is Princess Highway, on the cross road, turn right into Murrumbeena Road and I’ll be seconds away from my house.

Toward Street
Drive along Murrumbeena Road until you approach the railway. After crossing the railway, take the first left turn into the Railway Road. Now, You’ll see the train station on your left hand side. Toward Street, which is where I live, is on your right.

This is my Unit House
You’ve reached my house, but I’m not home. Sorry.
