Wah Tat Bank was the oldest bank in Sibu. Founded by Chew Geok Ling and his business partner, Teo Chong Loh. The business started with Wah Tat Money Exchange and Remittances which was the forerunner of Wah Tat Bank.
In 2001, Wah Tat Bank merged with Hong Leong Bank to form the Hong Leong Bank Berhad that you see today.

Thought that was MUI Bank, formerly Kwong Lee and was originally in the block across the road. Wah Tat was originally along Old Street (now Jalan Chew Geok Lin( where Cafe-cafe and Queens are located today)… Did they move later? I’m not so sure…
yeah, the building with the red zinc roof at the bottom corner is supposed to be Wah Tat Bank. I don’t know why the old building behind it bears the Chinese name of Wah Tat Bank. Maybe it was part of its property?

Oh…those Chinese characters. Odd place to place the name of a building, doncha think? At the back!
